Passenger car freeze protection is a necessity concern for rolling stock with potable water-bearing systems. These systems supply safe, uncontaminated water used for drinking, hand washing, hygiene and food preparation, including cleaning of surfaces, utensils and kitchenware. During frigid winter months, the water systems are at risk of freezing if the temperature drops too low. The results could be burst pipes and tanks, taking the car out of service and resulting in expensive and lengthy repairs.
During normal operation, a passenger car’s heating warms the water system, typically supplying on board toilets and kitchens. However, when the heat is turned off for switching locomotives, during layovers or a power outage the temperature inside of the cabin can quickly fall towards freezing. If the water in the system is not heated or drained it will eventually freeze and potentially cause a lot of damage that can disrupt kitchen galleys and sanitary systems. Freeze damage can result in lengthy and costly repairs which also leads to interrupted schedules for locomotive operation. To mitigate the risk of freezing pipelines, passenger cars should have a freeze protection plan for winter weather.
ThermOmegaTech®’s line of GURU PC® passenger car freeze protection valves are self-operating, thermostatic drain valves that protect potable water-bearing systems from freezing which in turn protects your investment and keeps your equipment safe.
The GURU PC® ¾” and 1″ valves monitor ambient temperatures and will automatically drain the water tanks if the air temperature falls to the valve’s set-point, 35°F, preventing burst piping and frozen tanks. Completely mechanical, with no outside power required, its high flow design allows for rapid draining, eliminating costly freeze damage.
Once the power and heat has been restored to the train, the GURU PC® will modulate closed again however, ThermOmegaTech® recommends using their electric heater assembly to quickly close the valve to refill the water system and get the car back into service as soon as possible.
The advanced, reliable GURU PC® valves increase up-time on passenger cars by preventing water lines from freezing before any damage can occur.
GURU PC® valves are recommended to be replaced every 18-24 months. ThermOmegaTech® now offers a replacement cartridge assembly kit to allow for easy in-line maintenance. To learn more contact us!
